Exchange-traded funds are similar to index funds that trade like a single stock. Until the advent of the ETF, it was impossible to trade indexes this easily through an equity account. Most ETFs are relatively static in make-up, like the SPY or QQQQ index funds. Others, like some of the PowerShares funds, are dynamic and the holdings are changed routinely. Some ETFs, like international funds and narrowly based indexes, have special risks that the investor should be aware of.
